Using satellite technology for internet access is nothing new – in fact, we have been offering satellite internet packages in Hungary for more than a decade. Traditional satellite internet services typically transmit data via one or two satellites orbiting the Earth at high altitude above the Equator.

A few years ago, however, US aerospace company SpaceX took a very different approach. It launched thousands of small satellites into space and placed them in orbit much closer to Earth than conventional communications satellites – in what is known as low Earth orbit (LEO).

These thousands of satellites form a dense network around the planet, continuously communicating with one another and with ground-based infrastructure. This enables significantly higher bandwidth, with speeds of up to 350 Mbps, combined with exceptionally low latency.

While traditional geostationary satellites orbit at an altitude of around 35,000–40,000 kilometres, Starlink satellites operate at just 340–1,200 kilometres above the Earth. This much shorter distance helps deliver low latency, typically around 40–60 ms on the user side.

The large number of satellites also provides another major advantage: outstanding reliability. If one satellite becomes unavailable due to a technical issue, nearby satellites can immediately take over its role. From the user’s perspective, the transition is seamless, helping ensure fast and continuous data transmission.
